8 Things to Know Before Starting Exercise with Oxygen Therapy

If you're new to EWOT, you probably have a few questions. How does it work? Do you need to be physically fit to try it? How long should a session last? And is there anything you should know before getting started?

EWOT, short for Exercise With Oxygen Therapy, combines physical activity with breathing oxygen-enriched air. The concept is simple, but understanding how to approach it and what to expect can make your first experience a lot less confusing.

Before you jump in, here are eight things worth knowing.

You Don't Need to be a Fitness Expert

One of the biggest misconceptions about EWOT is that you need to be extremely fit to try it. That's not necessarily the case. EWOT can be incorporated into different types of physical activity, depending on your fitness level and individual preferences. Some may prefer walking on a treadmill, while others might choose cycling on a stationary bike or another cardio-based activity. Choose an activity you can perform comfortably and consistently. You don't have to start with an intense workout or push yourself to exhaustion.

⚠️If you're new to exercise, start gently and build up gradually. If you have an underlying health condition, speak with your healthcare professional before beginning.

Understand How Your EWOT System Works

Before your first session, get familiar with the components of the EWOT System: Oxygen Machine, Oxygen Reservoir Bag, EWOT mask, and other accessories. Learn how to connect the components and prepare the system. A little preparation can make your first session much easier. Keep your setup away from smoking, open flames and heat sources, as oxygen makes other materials burn more easily.

A Session Doesn't Have to be Longer than 15 Minutes

When starting something new, it's easy to assume that longer sessions will deliver better results. With EWOT, there's no need to go longer. We recommend EWOT sessions of about 15 minutes. If you're new to EWOT, start with shorter sessions of 8–10 minutes and gradually work your way toward 15 minutes as you become comfortable with the routine. There's no need to push yourself to do more from day one. Start at a manageable pace and pay attention to how you feel.

The Right Pace Matters More Than You Think

EWOT combines physical activity with breathing oxygen-enriched air. That doesn't mean you need to turn every session into a high-intensity workout. Your exercise intensity should match your current fitness level and health status. A comfortable pace may be a sensible starting point if you're new to exercise.

Make EWOT Part of Your Routine

You don't have to change your daily routine to make time for EWOT. Just find a time when you can exercise comfortably without feeling rushed.

Pay Attention to How You Feel

Pay attention to your body's response during exercise. Don't assume that discomfort means a session is working or that you need to push through it. Stop exercising if you experience dizziness, chest pain, unusual shortness of breath, or feel faint. Seek urgent medical attention for severe or persistent symptoms. If you have a heart or lung condition, or another ongoing health concern, speak with your healthcare professional before starting EWOT. If you are prescribed oxygen, don't change how you use it without your doctor's advice.

Keep Your Expectations Realistic

When trying something new for your health, it's natural to think about how quickly you'll notice a difference. Starting EWOT doesn't mean you'll notice a dramatic difference after your first session. Responses vary from person to person and depend on your overall health, fitness level, and exercise routine. Focus on building a sensible workout routine, set realistic expectations, and avoid treating it as a replacement for prescribed medical care.

EWOT: Not a Replacement for Medical Care

EWOT is a wellness approach, not a medical treatment. EWOT can be the proactive step you can take to support your overall well-being. If you have an existing health condition, use prescribed medication, or are considering EWOT to address a specific medical concern, discuss it with your healthcare professional first.

The Takeaway

Before starting EWOT, take the time to understand how it works and how to use your EWOT system correctly. Begin with shorter sessions, choose an activity that suits your fitness level, and find a time that fits your daily routine. Pay attention to how your body responds and gradually build up as appropriate. Keep things simple, take it at your own pace, and stay consistent.
