The immune system is activated by antigens, which can be proteins on the surfaces of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. When these antigens bind to the receptors on immune cells, a complex series of processes are triggered in the body. Once the body comes into contact with a pathogen initially, it usually stores information about the disease-causing germ and how to combat its effects. This enables the body to mount a faster response upon re-exposure.
